What the Science Says
Vegetation isn’t the enemy, removing moisture is.
Moist gardens save homes…
The Escobedo Study (J.F. Escobedo et al 2025) found that homes with moist, well-maintained landscaping near the structure had a significantly higher survival rate during wildfires.
Vegetation within 5 to 10 meters (16 to 33 feet) of a home, when irrigated or moisture-retentive, can serve as a buffer—not a threat.
Fire-safe garden design isn’t about total clearing; it’s about plant type, good design, and maintenance.
"Homes with nearby trees with higher moisture content were more likely to survive."
